Do you know the Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop is thought to be the oldest sandwich shop in continuous operation in Springfield Illinois? This specific restaurant at 118 N Pasfield Street nearby the office building of IL Department of Public Health, built in 1921, claims to have the first drive-thru window in the U.S. The small original building, along historic US Route 66, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Tyler and I decided to go Maid-Rite for lunch today. It was possibly the first time there for both us in last five years. We both ordered Maid-Rite loose meat burgers along with french fries, strawberry flavored milk shake and home made root beer. The food is a lot better than other fast food restaurants. It is not a typical patty burger, it is cooked ground beef on a bun, but has a secret flavor of spices to the meat. The ground beef was seasoned and steamed to perfection with mustard, onion and a dab of relish. We both loved the flavor of the meat. Tyler really liked his root beer .

In addition to the awesome food, the manager was very nice and humorous, he made us feel like that we were at our own family’s kitchen. The feeling we never had at other restaurants. We enjoyed our short dining experience.
The restaurant is small, cute and clean, you can see them preparing and cooking food right in front of you. Lunch hour was always quite busy since many state workers stop by, you might have to wait for a few more minutes, we are sure this place welcomes all the Route 66 lovers and fans from all over the world.
